Information for the user – Tattoo

The tattoo consists of introducing coloring pigments into the skin through needle punctures. It is a permanent procedure; its removal (e.g., with laser) depends on multiple factors and does not always guarantee total disappearance.

Contraindications

• Do not perform: known allergy to pigments; presence in the area of moles, spots, warts or undiagnosed skin lesions; skin diseases such as psoriasis or urticaria.
• Medical report required: diabetes, heart or kidney disease, hepatitis, HIV or other infections; blood disorders or anticoagulant treatment (e.g., acenocoumarol); recent treatment with isotretinoin; epilepsy; psychological or personality disorders.
• Temporarily: local infections (viral warts, herpes simplex, bacterial infections), unstable scars, recent burns, ulcers or hematomas; recent treatments/interventions (aesthetic medical infiltrations, surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy); pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Health risks

• Bloodborne diseases (hepatitis, tetanus, HIV) if hygienic practices and regulations are not followed.
• Local bacterial, viral or fungal infections.
• Allergies to pigment components (e.g., chromium, nickel, cadmium, metallic oxides); yellow pigment may cause photodermatitis with sun exposure.
• Allergy to latex or anesthetics; reactivation of herpes simplex/zoster.
• Poor healing, hypertrophic or keloid scars; granulomatous reactions (more likely with green, blue and red).
• In laser removal, response varies depending on equipment, number of sessions, color, area, age, depth and skin type.

Pre-procedure information

• The least advisable season is summer (sweat, sun, beach/pool).
• Think carefully about the area (e.g., abdomen during pregnancy; lumbar region and possible future epidural anesthesia).
• Indicate if you will undergo magnetic resonance imaging or if you are a blood donor (donation will be temporarily limited).
• In the days before, avoid drugs, alcohol and antiplatelets (e.g., acetylsalicylic acid).
• It is preferable not to come fasting.

Aftercare

• Wash your hands before touching the area. Daily hygiene with saline solution and sterile gauze.
• Apply cold compress during the first two days (maximum 5 minutes at a time). Keep the area dry.
• Do not scratch or rub; if there is a scab, do not remove it.
• Avoid non-specific cosmetics (creams, make-up, petroleum jelly…).
• Avoid sun and UV rays; use total protection if unavoidable.
• Until healing, do not bathe in pool/beach or use sauna. Wear clothing that does not compress the area.
• If you are unsure of your medical history or if any reaction appears, consult a doctor.

Without informed consent (and medical certificate if applicable), the tattoo cannot be performed.
